Club History

The U.T.M.B. Galveston Rugby Club was established in 1967 thanks to the help of UTMB President Truman Blocker. Not only did it give university students, faculty, and staff an athletic outlet, the social aspects allowed these seemingly disparate groups to bond in a way that enhanced camaraderie among the community of the school. Dr. Blocker also felt it was an important outreach to the community, and that by allowing young people on the Island to interact with the UTMB family by playing on the team, the citizens and the people of the university would come to appreciate each other more fully.

Dr. Blocker's support not only of rugby in Galveston, but in all of Texas was so instrumental, that the championship trophy of the Texas Rugby Union was named for him. Over the years, teams from around the world have played on the UTMB campus, and each season the club brings teams from throughout the country to the school for its annual Mardi Gras Tournament.

We have a very rich tradition in hosting touring sides from other countries and hosting tournaments. We welcome any club that would like to put us on their tour or attend one of our tournaments. We promise to show you a good time, and hope to beat you in a game of rugby. Please come play some rugby, drink some beer, and sing. Whether you are from the USA, or another country we would like you to give us a call to check our schedule.
